The John Chamberlin Papers consist of a diary kept during the Civil War, a transcribed copy of the diary and a newspaperclipping about the diary dated August 4, 1991, from the Grand Forks Herald. The diary and the transcription of the diarywhere photocopied from originals held by Paul Meyer, John Chamberlin's grandson.

John Chamberlin was born in May 1845 in Ohio. He enlisted with Company 1 of the 23rd Ohio Infantry Regiment (Union Army) on March 15, 1864 at the age of 18. He was honorably discharged with the rank of corporal on July 26, 1865. He served under General Philip Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia and Virginia.
